ANN ARBOR MI- OK, it’s 7:15 on the morning of the Michigan game and I have been up for a couple of hours. Not unusual on the morning of the first game. especially on the road. Already checked the morning papers on line and did a little more prep work on my 2-deeps.
It was exciting to see the stadium yesterday, a picture is posted on this very website. It is a BIG HOUSE, there is no question about that. Most of the 109,000 seats are bench seats with very few chairbacks. The seats on the east sideline form a giant M, just like the one in the center of the field. And our newly renovated broadcast location is terrific. And very interesting, no lights atop Michigan Stadium.
Saw plenty of UConn fans around the stadium while Wayne and I were waiting endlessly for a cab (not the strong point of Ann Arbor). They all feel confident in their team. Wow, we’ve come a long way from the days when the Huskies would open with Northeastern or Hofstra, two schools that doesn’t even have a football program any more.
It’s a pretty historic day for the Huskies, to be part of the rededication ceremonies here at Michigan Stadium. But their focus isn’t on the Big House or the struggles Michigan has had in its first two years under Rich Rodriguez. And I get the sense the players will put all the distractions aside when the season kickoff at 3:36 eastern.
I will be tweeting from the stadium until pre game time at 2 pm @JoeDSports. Maybe even another picture or two. And at least one more post here on WTIC.com
The UConn football magazine with Bob begins the broadcast day at 2. Hope you are planning to join us.
